Admission to BU Law’s Certificate Programs is competitive and depends to a great extent on the candidate’s prior academic achievements and/or professional experience in law or a related field. While our programs are designed for qualified lawyers, we welcome applications from highly-qualified candidates who hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, with additional professional experience in a legal services or other related field. As such, you do not need to hold a law degree to apply to our certificate programs. If you wish to receive additional information describing the qualifications of students who have received admission to our certificate programs without formal legal training, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
A completed application includes the following documents and supporting materials:
Fall 2018 Deadline – Applications will be accepted until August 17, 2018.
Please note, Boston University School of Law uses a program-specific application form for the Certificate in Financial Services Compliance. Applicants looking to apply to other certificate programs, should email email@example.com for additional instructions.
For the purpose of admission, we require that candidates upload a copy of unofficial transcripts from all previous degree-granting institutions. Matriculating students will need to provide original transcripts from these institutions.
Candidates with detailed LinkedIn profiles may submit a link to their public LinkedIn profile in lieu of submitting a resume. Candidates without detailed LinkedIn profiles must submit an up-to-date resume.
Candidates with endorsements on their LinkedIn profile to not need to submit letters of recommendation. Candidates without endorsements should upload a letter of recommendation during the application process.
Applicants (whose native language is not English) must take either the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam to demonstrate their English competence, and should upload their score reports during the application process.
No work experience is required, although professional experience will aid in the acquisition and retention of program concepts.
Candidates may choose to supplement their other materials through a separate personal statement, outlining their reasons for being interested in the program. This is not required for an application to be considered complete.
Following a review of an applicant’s submitted materials, qualifying candidates will be selected for an interview with the Director of the program, conducted over Skype. The interview is an ideal time for applicants to ask in-depth questions about the program.
